National Obesity Week to be promoted by NPA

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) is working with the National Obesity Forum (NOF) to promote its first ever consumer awareness week this year. National Obesity Week (NOW!) will run from 2-8 November 2009 and will encourage the public to find out their body mass index (BMI) from their local pharmacy.

The NPA has responded to the Scottish Government’s Better Diabetes Care by calling for the inclusion of community pharmacists in the Diabetes Managed Clinical Network as well as adding diabetes to the Chronic Medication Service.

The NPA is encouraging all prereg tutors to book their prereg pharmacists on to the NPA programme as soon as possible to avoid disappointment due to the limited number of places remaining. The programme commences in October 2009 and candidates have a choice of 3 study venues to choose from: Birmingham, St Albans and Wakefield.

The NPA has developed a pharmacy IT Green Paper and started a process to design what IT could be needed in the future for community pharmacy. The NPA is requesting comment from its members and others through the NPA IT Forum website.

Over 50 pharmacists trained up for NPA’s seasonal flu vaccination service

Over 50 pharmacists have been trained to provide seasonal flu vaccinations under a private Patient Group Direction that the NPA is facilitating. Training days were conducted in London and Birmingham with further training days scheduled at the start of September 2009 in Newport, Durham, St Albans and Haydock.

The CCA, AIMp, BPSA, and NPA are appealing for an immediate reinstatement of community pharmacists to the Shortage Occupations List after the removal of community pharmacists from the list by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) last month.

The National Pharmacy Association and Allergy UK provided free allergy screening to the public at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show from 7-12 July. Over 7,000 members of the public picked up information on community pharmacy allergy screening or asked for advice and 75 allergy screenings were carried out.

NPA encourages members to vote “Yes” to new Royal Charter

In 2010 the RPSGB will form a new professional leadership body to support pharmacists. The existing regulatory function of RSPGB will transfer General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). To allow this the existing Royal Charter of RSPGB needs to change. The RPSGB have created a new Royal Charter and are now asking pharmacists to vote on the changes proposed.
