Self Care Campaign launch – NPA reiterates call for national minor ailments scheme

The Self Care Campaign launched today, aimed at helping people to be confident in their health care choices and freeing up GP time to look after complex conditions. Minor ailments such as coughs and colds account for up to one fifth of GP workload. The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) recommends people visit their pharmacy for help and advice for such self limiting illnesses.

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has commented on the consultation for Building on Strengths: delivering the future – draft Regulations to the Health Act 2009 – Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments. Overall the NPA is keen for pharmaceutical services not to be considered in isolation but as an integral part of primary care services.

‘Lightening the Load’ workshop held at the NPA

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) kicked off its ‘Lightening the Load’ (burden of administration) project at NPA headquarters on 16 February. A workshop involving NPA members and pharmacy representatives from across the UK covered the nature of ‘paperwork’ imposed on pharmacies by outside agencies and the means by which this growing burden might be contained.

Twenty five pharmacy support staff from seven pharmacies in South West Essex received training from the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) on the NHS Health Check service in January 2010. Delivered on behalf of NHS South West Essex, the training helped the staff to understand how the service operates and their role within it.

EPS Release 2 SOP available for NPA members

The NPA has produced a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to help members in England with patient nomination of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) Release 2. Pharmacies will need to have a nomination SOP in place when seeking patient nominations as part of EPS.

Smokefree Future - NPA keen to work on DH Strategy

Today (28 January 2010) Anne Main MP visited the new hearing lab at Nash Pharmacy (Unit 1 Ermine Close, next to Waitrose) in St Albans. The Nash Hearing Lab will offer hearing tests to the public free of charge and provide advice on the best course of action.

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) held its first member event of 2010 in Preston, Lancashire on Wednesday 20 January. NPA staff led a workshop on Information Governance and NPA chairman Ian Facer gave his reflections on pharmacy business in the current climate. This was followed by a lively Question & Answer session, at which topical issues such as the medicines supply chain, administrative burden and pharmaceutical needs assessments were hotly debated.
